ADVOCACY ALERT

President Bush made good on his threats and vetoed the CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2007.

The overwhelming bipartisanship demonstrated on passing this bill in the House (265-159) and a veto-proof majority in the Senate (67-29) was dismissed with a stroke of the President's pen.

Rarely has a bill had the support of such wide ranging group of organizations.  The SCHIP bill is supported by a coalition of 270 groups, from the AARP to the YMCA.

Even in the face of this daunting challenge, you can still make a difference!  We are still about two dozen votes short in the House of an override.  The power of your calls, faxes, and e-mails has been proven in the vote switch of a stunning 44 Representatives who voted to support CHIP after previously voting against it.  We need you now more than ever to continue the pressure on Mississippi's congressional delegation.

We particularly want to focus on the Mississippi Representatives that voted against the bill, which are Representatives Gene Taylor (4 th District), Chip Pickering (3 rd District), and Roger Wicker (1 st District).

Please call them at 1-800-828-0498 and e-mail them at

Let them know you want health care coverage for Mississippi's children.  Ask them to vote to override the President's veto of the CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2007 bill.

Mississippi 's children are waiting for us to take action on their behalf.
