Weekly Legislative Update

February 01, 2008

Another week has passed in the Legislature and there has been minor headway made on major issues facing legislators. A small victory for education advocates was accomplished this week. The Mississippi Adequate Education Program was passed out of the House of Representatives with not only full funding, but an excess of $62 million more than was requested during the Legislative Budget hearings last month. It remains to be seen the fate that awaits it in the Senate. In health related news, the trauma care task force gave a presentation to the Senate on the needs of trauma care in the State. This task force was formed last year with the express purpose of assessing and proposing solutions for the state of trauma care in Mississippi. It was recommended that $32 million dollars be appropriated to fund items such as a burn center and prop up hospitals providing trauma care services. This week also served as instructional time for freshmen legislators on the biggest issue this year – Medicaid. House Medicaid Chairman Dirk Dedeaux, held an informational session to those new to the committee on the inner workings of the Medicaid program. Finally, a hearing is scheduled for Monday on the Medicaid’s face to face eligibility policy. Chairman Dedeaux will be hearing from various groups on the effect this policy is having on Medicaid beneficiaries, especially children.
